Innersloth’s 2018 online multiplayer social deduction game, Among Us, was developed and published in the United States. Schell Games will release a separate VR version of the game, Among Us VR, for Meta Quest 2, and PlayStation VR. The game was released on iOS and Android devices in June 2018 and on Windows later that year in November, allowing for cross-platform play. In December 2020, the game was released on the Nintendo Switch, followed by December 2021 on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. While the game gained little widespread notice when it was first introduced in 2018, it exploded in popularity in 2020 because of several well-known Twitch streams and YouTubers playing it. The party game Mafia and the science fiction horror film The Thing were both inspirations for the game.
Each player chooses one of two roles—most are Crewmates, while a few are Impostors—and their look does not change. Players suspected of being Impostors can be eliminated by a majority vote of the remaining players, which can be triggered by any player reporting a dead corpse or calling an Emergency Meeting (except during a crisis).
Among Us takes place in a space-themed scenario, with players dressed as colorful armless cartoon astronauts; nevertheless, three other maps have been added in the years following the introduction of “The Skeld” spaceship: the floating “MIRA HQ,” the “Polus” planetary station, and “The Airship” (based on Infiltrating the Airship from the Henry Stickmin series, also developed by Innersloth).
The Crewmates’ purpose is to find the Impostors, destroy them, and accomplish tasks throughout the map; the Impostor(s) goal is to surreptitiously disrupt the operation, either by killing the Crewmates before they complete all of their chores or by causing an unresolvable calamity.
A round can take place on one of four maps as of 2021: a spacecraft known as “The Skeld,” a headquarters building known as “MIRA HQ,” a planet base known as “Polus,” or an airship based on Innersloth’s Henry Stickmin series known as “The Airship.” Among Us is a multiplayer game for four to fifteen players (formerly four to ten), with a minimum of five players suggested. Each round, up to three players are picked at random and in secrecy to be the Impostor(s).
If any win condition is met, games might also terminate with players abandoning the game (if a Crewmate quits the game, their tasks are automatically considered completed). The Impostors can win in one of two ways: by killing the majority of the crew (until they’re even in numbers) or by destroying a crucial system on the map (if the Crewmates don’t solve it in time). Similarly, the Crewmates can win in one of two ways: by completing all duties or by identifying and ejecting all Impostors.
Crewmates are given “tasks” to accomplish across the map (in the form of minigames, mini puzzles, and simple toggles) at the start of the game, which largely consists of maintenance work on essential systems like mending wires and downloading data. To fit in with Crewmates, impostors are provided with a phony list of proposed chores. They cannot, however, officially do chores and can only act as though they are performing any of the ship’s tasks. Impostors, on the other hand, can disrupt essential systems (such as The Skeld’s oxygen supply); close doors to rooms; transit via the ventilation system rapidly and surreptitiously (often called “venting”), and kill Crewmates while standing near them.
On each map, there are numerous surveillance devices to aid the Crewmates in identifying Impostors, such as security cameras and an admin system on The Skeld, a door log at MIRA HQ, and a vitals indicator in Polus. Crewmates can additionally validate their identity by completing “visual tasks” (tasks with animations that only play for Crewmates), which Impostors cannot imitate.
If a Crewmate is murdered or voted out and ejected, they become a ghost. Ghosts may see and communicate with other ghosts, pass through walls, and observe other players’ activities. Ghosts do not have a limited cone of vision like living players do. Furthermore, ghosts are unable to communicate with or be observed by living players. Ghosts assist their living teammates by executing different acts of sabotage or accomplishing their jobs.
