On stage, Citrix CEO Mark Templeton demonstrated an early version of BlueStacks and announced the companies’ collaboration. On October 11, 2011, the public alpha version of App Player was released. On June 7, 2014, App Player exited beta. Samsung announced its investment in BlueStacks on July 23, 2014. The total outside investment in BlueStacks now stands at $26 million.
The App Player, a virtualization software for Android, is available in Windows 10 and macOS versions. Basic components of the software are available for free download and use. A monthly membership for advanced optional features is required. As of November 2019, the App Player is said to be capable of running 1.5 million Android apps. BlueStacks claimed that its apps had been downloaded 1 billion times as of February 2021. Mouse, keyboard, and external touchpad controls are available in App Player.
